Soul Midwifery

A new way of dying

‘It should be a sacred day for you when one of your people die,

 a sacred day,

when a soul is released and returns to its home.’

 (Black Elk)

'Death is but a doorway to a new life,

We live today. We shall live again.

In many forms we shall return to this earth'.

Ancient Egyptian proverb

Soul Midwifery is a movement begun by Felicity Warner, and is becoming much more accepted in todays changing world.

Although the title 'Soul Midwife' may be modern, the role we offer is ancient drawing on traditional skills which have been mostly forgotten in todays modern world.

As a society we have handed over death to hospitals, hospices and the medical professions as though our death is nothing to do with us. We have forgotten how to be around the dying, how to talk , how to comfort and how to ease the dying persons journey. We have forgotten that death is the most important, sacred journey our Soul makes in this lifetime.

Death is a natural process of Life and will happen to all of us, doesn't it make sense to be involved in our own death? To plan for our transition?

To put in place those things that we want around us when the time comes, to have the people around us who we want to be present.

Soul Midwives are non-medical holistic and spiritual companions to the dying. We work alongside the medical professions, we help to ease the passage of those who are dying and ensure their death is a peaceful and tranquil experience.

We are trained to recognise where someone is on their journey and how we can best assist at each stage. We use many techniques to ease the way including healing, gentle touch, colour, sacred oils, sound, meditation and visualisation. We listen, we care, we help release soul wounds, we assist in leaving memories for loved ones.

We support the dying and also their friends, families and carers as often they too have little emotional and spiritual support. We are not connected to any religion, we are here to support all concerned.

Felicity Warner, the founder of the Soul Midwifery movement sums up the role:

'Soul Midwives

  • listen, provide gentle therapeutic techniques and ensure compassionate care at all times
  • work holistically with both the spirit and the soul of the dying person
  • keep a loving vigil
  • create and hold a sacred and healing space for the dying person
  • recognise and support the individual needs of the departing soul to enable a tranquil death
  • use sound, touch, colour and smell and other gentle techniques to help alleviate pain and anxiety
  • support families and loved ones.

The Soul Midwife’s most important role is to provide comfort, continuous support and reassurance in helping a dying person to experience the death he or she wants.'
